WALLACE SAUNDERS AUSTIN BROWN ENOCHS, NAMED PARTNER

Larry Austin

        LARRY AUSTIN, OBITUARY

Larry Jay Austin left this world on September 1st 2011 as he came to it on February 12, 1929: in peace, in harmony with himself, and others, in humor and in character. He leaves behind his wife of fifty-one years, Rosemary, his daughter, Jennifer, his son, Joe, his nephew, Craig Rhodes and family and his niece, Patricia Sloop and family. Born in Halstead, Kansas, Larry grew up in Wichita, Kansas where he attended the public schools and graduated from the Municipal University of Wichita. After graduation from college, he was selected in the Army to serve as a cryptographer in the Korean War. His passion for sports though led him to become the Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of Athletics and Recreation for the Ninety-Seventh Signal Battalion in Germany. Upon his return from the Armed Services, Larry enrolled in and graduated from the University of Kansas Law School in 1957. He was admitted by examination to the Bar Associations of both Missouri and Kansas. After working for the Missouri law firm of Deacy & Deacy, he joined K.B. Wallace and Frank Saunders in Overland Park, Kansas to become a named partner in what would soon be one of Johnson County’s leading law firms, Wallace, Saunders, Austin, Brown & Enochs. Larry’s devotion to his profession prompted his service on Bar Association committees too numerous to mention. To his peers, he was a teacher and coach; to his friends, he was a reliable source of support as well as a remarkable raconteur; and to his family, he brought a kind of unconditional love that gave comfort and confidence even during the darkest of time. The family welcomes friends and colleagues to a visitation from 9:30 am to 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 7th at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 7231 Mission Road, Prairie village, Kansas. A service on Larry’s behalf will follow immediately thereafter. Interment in Prince of Peach Mausoleum, Resurrection Cemetery. For those who wish to express a remembrance, the family suggests donations to the University of Kansas Law School-KU Endowment Association, P.O. Box 928, Lawrence, Kansas 66044. Condolences may be expressed at: www.porterfuneralhome.com; Arrangements: Porter Funeral Homes & Crematory, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS; (913) 438-6444) Porter funeral Homes and Crematory.

I was fortunate enough to work here when Larry practiced law. He had a passion for his work and for his clients that demanded respect. After his retirement, Larry was a constant source of good humor when he came to the office. I so enjoyed talking with him, or hearing him talk, about KU. He loved the NCAA pool, and could tell you exactly where everyone stood after each round of basketball! More than that, though, I appreciated the way he genuinely cared for all of us. It was so evident from the way he would quiz us about ourselves and our families. He truly lived a full and good life, and we were blessed to know him.
